Originally installed at Alton Court Waterworks Pumping Station, Ross on Wye. It was in general service until 1964 and was last used in 1970. For some years from 1932 onwards it provided back-up to its successor engine, an Allen two-cylinder diesel engine which can also be found at the Museum.

    Four Stroke Suction Gas Engine.
    Magneto Ignition.
    Bore 11” (280mm)
    Stroke 24” (610mm)
    Speed 260 rpm
    Horsepower: 30 hp (22kw)
    Originally fuelled by Producer Gas. Converted to be fuelled by Natural Gas.
    Start up: originally on petrol, now compressed air.
    The engine drives through a Perkins' gearbox with early double-helical gears and twin Joseph Evans Cornish pumps which were originally installed at Alton Court in 1882.

    Producer Gas Plant which originally fuelled this engine is also on display at the Museum. Reference Code: 2005_061_A_001.
    Blower & Pelton Wheel (Reference Code: 1987_001_A_001) is connected to a pressure vessel (Reference Code: 2005_069_A_001) and was used to supply gas to the National Gas Engine.
    Joseph Evans Cornish Pumps (Reference Code: 1990_001_A_001) were originally driven by double acting steam cylinders but converted to be driven by the National Gas Engine.
